When you love, the first temptation is to hand over your lantern. You say, “Here, hold my light, I trust you with it.” But lanterns are not meant to be carried by someone else. They are meant to glow in your own hand, lighting your path. If two lanterns walk side by side, the path becomes twice as bright. If one follows the other, one lantern gets hidden behind a back, and shadows grow long and confusing.

So many of your tears come from this: you imagine that love means walking inside the same pair of shoes. But oh, how silly! You will trip over each other’s toes. Better to each keep your own shoes, your own rhythm, and meet on the bridge that appears between your two paths.

Intuition is the compass tucked under your ribs. If you stop listening to it, you will end up walking in circles around someone else’s campfire, wondering why you feel cold. Relationships are not about circling one another endlessly. They are about sharing firewood, sitting together for warmth, and then letting the other go find more branches in the forest when it is their time.

Space is not distance, it is breathing room. Two birds on the same branch can still spread their wings. If one bird insists on folding both wings to match the other, soon they will both forget the sky.

And do not be afraid of compromise, just don’t turn it into camouflage. Do not paint yourself to match your partner’s walls until you disappear in their room. True compromise is more like cooking soup: you bring carrots, they bring potatoes, and together you make something hearty. But if you throw yourself entirely into their pot, you will be overcooked and invisible.
