March is the month of St. Joseph, the foster father of Our Lord and the protector of the Holy Family. It is a special time in the Church to turn to this humble and powerful saint for guidance, protection, and intercession. One of the most beautiful ways to honor St. Joseph is through a nine-day novena, a dedicated period of prayer asking for his help and example, leading up to his feast day on March 19. We will pray to this novena from March 10 – March 18.

Who is St. Joseph?

St. Joseph was a righteous man, chosen by God to care for Jesus and Mary. Though Scripture gives us few words from him, his life speaks volumes. He was obedient, courageous, and loving, facing trials with faith and humility. St. Joseph was a carpenter, a husband, a father, and the model of quiet sanctity. The Church has long honored him as the patron of workers, families, fathers, and a happy death, trusting his intercession in every need.

History of the March Novena

The March Novena to St. Joseph is a devotional tradition in which the faithful pray for nine consecutive days, typically in preparation for his feast on March 19. Novenas have been a part of Catholic practice for centuries, modeled on the nine days the Apostles and Mary spent in prayer before Pentecost. Devotion to St. Joseph grew especially during the 19th century, when Popes like Pius IX, Leo XIII, and John Paul II encouraged faithful Catholics to seek his intercession. The novena is a time to imitate his virtues and ask for his protection in our lives.

What to Pray For

St. Joseph is known as a powerful intercessor. People often pray to him for:

  • Protection of family and home. Invoking his care as he protected the Holy Family.
  • Employment and provision. Trusting him as the patron of workers and those seeking guidance in their work.
  • Courage and faithfulness. To follow God’s will, even in times of trial.
  • A holy death. St. Joseph died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, making him a patron of a peaceful, faithful passing.
